SPECIALTY
NURSING UNITS
Intensive Care Unit
ICU nurses provide a highly technical level of care. Our patients
have continuous cardiac monitoring and are closely assessed by monitors
and staff. Visitors are welcome and visiting hours are flexible
based on the nurses judgment regarding the needs of the individual
patient.
We ask that you follow the directions of the nurse for the benefit
of the patients care. A small waiting room with a telephone
is provided for adult ICU visitors. A larger waiting area is provided
further down the hall for larger groups or those with children.
If a family member wishes to stay overnight, a cot can be provided
in the waiting room. Please communicate needs in this regard to
the nurse as early as possible in the day.
Medical/Surgical Unit-Pediatrics
The Third floor Medical/Surgical unit provides 24-hour care to acutely
ill adults and children. Standard visiting regulation and policies
are followed. A cot may be provided for one family member with the
approval of the patients nurse.
Medical/Surgical patients are generally very ill and require a high
level of skilled assessment and monitoring by the nursing staff.
Discharge planning services are initiated upon admission to assure
appropriate home care arrangements.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
You may choose to have the baby room with you after delivery if
your doctor approves. The baby can be returned to the nursery for
the night if you wish. NEVER leave your baby unattended in your
room.
If you do not wish to room in, you may have your baby anytime you
wish. Just ask your nurse and she will bring the baby to you. We
ask that you do not go into the nursery unless your baby requires
special care and is unable to be brought to your room.
A 4 I.D. system is used at SLVRMC - 2 on the baby, one on the mother
and the fourth on another person named by the mother. Only persons
with a matching I.D. band may take the baby from the nursery. When
you come to the nursery to pick up your baby or the nurse brings
your baby to the room, she will ask you for the number on the I.D.
bands which were put on you and the baby in the delivery room.
Newspaper Birth Announcement
The birth announcement for your baby may be published in the San
Luis Valley newspapers. An information sheet is included with the
birth certificate paperwork for your convenience; please take the
information sheet to the newspaper office if you choose to have
this announcement printed.
Photographs
Your baby's picture is taken before you are discharged from the
hospital. An independent photography contractor provides this service.
A brochure will be given to you after you deliver your baby, if
you wish to select a package. Photos will be mailed directly to
you in 2-3 weeks. Mail orders, checks and credit cards accepted
- NO CASH. You are welcome to take your own photos at any time.
Surgical Services
Visitors are welcome to wait in the area located on the second floor
outside of the surgery department. If a procedure is lengthy, updates
of progress from the surgery will given by the surgery receptionist
to significant others and/or family members periodically.
The surgeon will make a point to visit with significant others and/or
family and friends after the procedure is completed. If you do not
plan to stay in the waiting area or leave for any reason, please
inform the receptionist of your departure and plans for returning
in case the physician needs to reach you. The phone number for the
Surgery Receptionist is 719-587-1250.
Waiting Areas
In addition to the main lobby, there are specially designated lounge
areas for families of patients in the critical care units, Medical/Surgical
Units, the Emergency Department, Obstetrics and Surgery.
