Department
of Surgery: Operating Room Technician
Job
Overview:
This position requires a clinically competent Operating Room Technician (ORT)
who works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse in delivering safe
and effective care to the patient during the intraoperative period. Effectively
interacts with patients and health care team members, while maintaining the
surgical department standards. The ORT should display characteristics of flexibility,
teamwork, organization and be able to function in an environment that frequently
produces a high level of stress and fatigue.
JOB
QUALIFICATIONS
Licensure
and/or Certifications Required:
- Certification
as an ORT is preferred
- Must
be currently certified in BLS
Education
Required:
- Must
be a high school graduate and have completed an accredited
program of Operating Room Technology.
Knowledge
and Skills Required:
Adherence to hospital/department policy
- Understands,

- Supports

- Complies
with surgery department policy and procedures
- Complies
with staffing rotations, taking call and floating to other
units
Patient
care coordinator:
- Assists
registered nurse in planning patient care
- Collaborates
with other health care team members, e.g. anesthesia, surgeons,
and nurses
Implements
patient care:
- Maintains
asepsis
- Performs
scrubbing duties
- Functions
as a clinical preceptor
- Performs
central supply duties, processing sterile instruments for OR,
ER and other units
Care
of environment and equipment:
- Maintains
department in a safe and clean manner
- Maintains
competency in use of equipment used in the OR e.g. electrosurgical
unit, autoclave, Steris, etc.
- Demonstrates
proficiency in maintaining sterile field
Information
processing and documentation:
- Communicates
patient information for continuum of care
- Orders
supplies and stocks sterile core
- Uses
computer system efficiently
- Maintains
accurate records when operating autoclave to ensure package
sterility
Interpersonal
skills:
- Communicates with co-workers effectively
- Maintains adaptability
- Supports OR team work principles
- Resolves problems, seeks help when necessary
- Consistently meets the hospital’s Customer Service Quality
Standards
Experience
Required:
- Prefer
minimum of 1 year OR experience scrubbing on a variety of surgical
procedures.
