Screening and Prevention

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than half of all cancer deaths could be prevented if people adopted cancer prevention measures, including receiving routine check-ups, living a healthy lifestyle, and having an awareness of the early signs of cancer. Cancer can be discovered early or prevented altogether through periodic check-ups and screening procedures.

CANCER SCREENING

At SLVRMC we offer several different cancer screening programs, at low cost to you.

  • Women's Wellness Connection: Free breast and cervical screening for women with limited income and limited or no insurance who are 40 to 64 years of age.
  • Colorectal Screening Program: Free colonoscopy screening for men and women with limited income and no insurance who are 50 years and older.
  • Stephanie L. Miner Women's Imaging Center Care Fund: A fund assisting patients in receiving screening and diagnostic procedures for Women's Health Issues.

Contact the patient navigator 719-587-6319 for more information on these programs.

Recognize the Signs

Another part of preventive health is learning to recognize when changes are happening in your body. Here are a couple things to look for. If you notice any changes, talk to your health care provider right away:

  • A lump anywhere on your body
  • Losing weight without trying
  • A lasting fever
  • A cough that does not go away
  • Body aches and pains that do not go away
  • Changes or blood in your stools
  • Skin changes or sores that do not go away or get worse
  • Other changes or symptoms that are new or do not go away
