About myelosuppression
Myelosuppression is a decrease in the number of white blood cells. These cells help the body fight infections.
White blood cells often decrease after most chemotherapy. These blood cells usually recover
before the next scheduled dose. Since your white blood cells are low or may get low, you will need to protect your body from infection.
Call your doctor for any of the following
- temperature greater than 1OO.5°F taken by mouth
- cough
- sore throat or stiff neck
- any other signs of infection
To prevent infection
- Maintain adequate food and fluid intake.
- Do not eat raw fruits or vegetables.
- Avoid crowds and people with infections.
- Limit your contact with children who may be carriers of certain diseases.
- Avoid contact with pets (mammals and birds). Do not change litter boxes or clean cages.
- Avoid gardening or contact with potted soil and fresh floral arrangements.
- Maintain personal hygiene. Wash hands often. Bathe or shower each day. Follow mouth care instructions.
- Get adequate rest and exercise.
- Consult your doctor before traveling.
