COLYTE BOWEL PREPARATION SOLUTION

This information has been prepared to help you understand the procedure for bowel prepping prior to colonoscopy examinations, surgery or radiology examinations.

This important examination requires careful preparation
Your doctor will explain the need for Colyte Solution to prepare yourself for this examination. It is very important that you follow the full program of preparation. The results obtained from the exam are dependent on your lower bowel being carefully cleansed and empty. An improperly prepared bowel may mean that the exam will have to be repeated at another time; and more importantly, any matter left in the colon can hide any important conditions that may be present.

What is Colyte solution?
Colyte solution is a type of "laxative". It is a slightly salty flavored liquid that is consumed in large amounts to cleanse the bowel. This solution is "balanced" which means as it is ingested, it passes through the intestine without being absorbed, leading to rapid bowel evacuation.

Why must I use the Colyte solution?

The conventional method of bowel preparations involves a two-day preparation period including a clear liquid diet, administration of laxatives and tap water enemas prior to the exam. This requires time and may be inconvenient for you. Colyte is a dependable, more comfortable and quicker method of cleansing the colon.

How do I take Colyte? When do I take it? How much should I drink?
You will purchase 1(one) bottle of Colyte solution that needs to be mixed with 1 (one) gallon of water, shaken up and refrigerated on the morning before the exam. Make sure to shake vigorously prior to drinking.

ONE DAY BEFORE THE EXAM:

  • 8:00 a.m. - Eat a light meal. Mix the Colyte with a gallon of tap water and put it in the refrigerator.
  • 12:00 p.m. - Eat a light meal.
  • 2:00 p.m. - Start drinking solution. Drink 1 to 2 glasses (8-16 oz) every 20-30 minutes until you have consumed the entire gallon.
  • 6:00-8:00 p.m. - Eat no dinner. Prep should be complete. Bowel movements should be liquid without stool particles.

NOTE: Consume only clear liquids after you have finished the prep, such as clear juice, bullion, tea, plain jello (no RED jello), etc.

Children age 5 and younger need to be on clear liquids the day before the exam and the day of the exam they need a suppository. (You can purchase the Rectal suppository at your local pharmacy). If you have any question regarding this product, please contact your physician.
