ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound is simply a medical procedure that uses sound waves to
examine and diagnose medical conditions inside the body. Ultrasound
can be used to "see" an unborn baby. It can also be used
to diagnose conditions such as cancer, blood clots and eye disorders.
How it Works
A transducer (microphone like device) is placed over the area being
examined. Sound waves pass through the skin from the transducer
and bounce of certain organs and tissues in the body. The sound
is reflected back through the transducer and the image of the organ
or issue is projected on screen.
Uses of the ultrasound
A large portion of the use of ultrasound is in pregnant mothers.
The baby can be "seen" and checked by the doctor before
it is even born. The fetus can be checked for heart defects, weight,
brain activity, sex and many fetal disorders.
Ultrasound is also used as a diagnostic tool for many diseases.
It is less expensive than higher tech testing and can detect many
of the same problems. If your doctor finds a problem with an ultrasound,
he may prescribe additional tests to determine the final diagnosis.
Ultrasound in the SLV
The San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center has two ultrasound machines.
